MOBILE, Ala. – The third-ranked UWF men's golf team had an uncharacteristically poor round to close out the Gulf South Conference Championship but did just enough down the stretch to claim it's record 17th league title at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Magnolia Grove Crossings Course on Tuesday.
The Argonauts shot just their fifth round in the 300s all season and their first since October for a 288-293-303=884, 20-over-par total and a 3-shot victory over Valdosta State.
UWF saw its 12-stroke lead evaporate through the early part of the back nine before the teams stood tied at plus-17 for the tourney with three holes to play. But the Argos quickly regained a 2-stroke edge when junior
Harry Butler birdied 18 and VSU's Brock Healy bogeyed in the following group.
From there, UWF made two bogeys and VSU made three to close the round and propel the Argos to their seventh-consecutive GSC crown, two shy of Troy State's league record nine set from 1980-88.
Sophomore Juan Ignacio de Giacomi had a team-low 73 on Tuesday, placing him tied for 13th at 6-over-par, 222.
Seniors
Christian Bosso and
Jacob Huizinga each finished their GSC tourney among the top 10. Huizinga's up-and-down round consisted of four birdies, eight pars, four bogeys and two double bogeys on his way to a 68-75-76=219 total, placing him in sixth position. Bosso's final round 78 dropped him into a tie for seventh at 72-70-78=220.
Junior
Alejandro Restrepo was 2-under-par through eight holes before playing the final 10 at 8-over-par to finish tied for 19th at 72-78-78=228. Butler used his birdie on the 54th hole to finish tied for 26th at 76-77-76=229.
Delta State's Zach Zediker won the individual title for the second-straight year. His 5-under-par 211 was five shots better than VSU teammates Matt Anderson and Gage Smith.
UWF will now prepare for the NCAA Division II Men's Golf South/Southeast Regional, which will be played May 9-11 at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The official announcement of all four regional fields will be on Friday, April 26.
